DELSU Professor Makes Case for Healthcare Infrastructure.

Professor Omo-Aghoja of Delta State University, Abraka, has championed the strengthening of existing health infrastructure at several levels of medical service across the country as well as providing new healthcare facilities to ensure an acceptable level of maternal health.

The foremost professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology made this case while delivering his inaugural lecture at the 96th Inaugural Lecture Series of the university on Thursday, January 26, 2023.

In his lecture, he emphasized the need for the government at all tiers to initiate policies and programs to tackle the high level of poor maternal healthcare.

"It is estimated that about 10-20% of couples have difficulties in conceiving successfully... the prevalence of infertility is particularly high in sub-Saharan Africa, varying from 20-40% in some parts of West Africa where it constitutes a significant portion of the workload of the gynecologists, accounting for 80% of all consultations," he said.

Omo-Aghoja observed that male fertility had been poorly researched, especially in Africa where it is believed, erroneously though, that men do not have problems with infertility, hence women bear the blame and burden of infertility in marriages. He reiterated that male infertility is high, insisting that it amounts to over 50%, but the male supremacist disposition of Africa tends to consign this crucial fact to the sidelines.

Also Speaking, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andy Egwunyenga lauded the Inaugural Lecturer for his quality presentation adding that Professor Omo-Aghoja was one of the best scholars in the University. The Vice-Chancellor described the Inaugural Lecture as ‘’warm and robust’’.

While decorating the inaugural lecturer with the Distinguished University Honorary Medal, the VC urged him and other senior academics to take the mentorship of junior colleagues more seriously.
