DELSU Professor Makes Case for Healthcare Infrastructure.

 Chidex Onyemah

Professor Omo-Aghoja of Delta State University, Abraka, has championed the strengthening of existing health infrastructure at several levels of medical service across the country as well as providing new healthcare facilities to ensure an acceptable level of maternal health.

The foremost professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology made this case while delivering his inaugural lecture at the 96th Inaugural Lecture Series of the university on Thursday, January 26, 2023.

In his lecture, he emphasized the need for the government at all tiers to initiate policies and programs to tackle the high level of poor maternal healthcare.

"It is estimated that about 10-20% of couples have difficulties in conceiving successfully... the prevalence of infertility is particularly high in sub-Saharan Africa, varying from 20-40% in some parts of West Africa where it constitutes a significant portion of the workload of the gynecologists, accounting for 80% of all consultations," he said.

Omo-Aghoja observed that male fertility had been poorly researched, especially in Africa where it is believed, erroneously though, that men do not have problems with infertility, hence women bear the blame and burden of infertility in marriages. He reiterated that male infertility is high, insisting that it amounts to over 50%, but the male supremacist disposition of Africa tends to consign this crucial fact to the sidelines.

Also Speaking, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andy Egwunyenga lauded the Inaugural Lecturer for his quality presentation adding that Professor Omo-Aghoja was one of the best scholars in the University. The Vice-Chancellor described the Inaugural Lecture as ‘’warm and robust’’.

While decorating the inaugural lecturer with the Distinguished University Honorary Medal, the VC urged him and other senior academics to take the mentorship of junior colleagues more seriously.

By Chidex Onyemah

The President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence, Most Rev. (Dr) Daniel Okoh has dedicated the CAN secretariat in Makurdi, Benue State on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.

Commissioning the secretariat, he described the event as historic, stating that the edifice shall remain a rallying point that enhances our movement towards Christian unity.

“The Church in Benue State has come to stay and it shall continue to break new grounds, the coalition of the forces of evil shall not be able to stop the move of God in this state.” he said.

Archbishop Okoh expressed concern over the killings of farmers, among Christians, in Benue State by insurgents, noting that he is equally aware of the “level of calamity and mindless bloodletting.” He said despite the security challenge the state government is grappling with, the coalition of forces of evil shall not succeed and take the people’s minds away from worshipping God.

His words: “Instead of tears, God will bring joy; instead of extermination, helplessness and devastation, God will bring restoration and abundance to people of the state. There will be an upsurge in faith and revival like never before in the state as this is the beginning of testimonies, and it shall never cease... Weeping may endure for a night, there shall be joy in the morning.

The CAN president commended Governor Samuel Ortom for making the project his priority despite other pressing needs and lean resources at his disposal, and implored Christians in the state to resist attempts to turn the edifice into a house of commotion due to political interests.

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom, donated N50 million for the construction of a 30-room accommodation at the state secretariat of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Announcing the donation, on behalf of the state, the governor reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to religious tolerance and harmony and commended the unity that exists among the various Christian blocks in the state.

Ortom expressed optimism that the building would be completed before the expiration of his tenure to provide accommodation for Christian leaders visiting the state adding that it will also serve as a source of revenue for CAN.

He also expressed gratitude to the president of CAN, Most Rev. Daniel Okoh for graciously honouring the state to dedicate the secretariat.

CAN President Charges Christians To Submit To The Leadership Of The Holy Spirit.

Chidex Onyemah

The President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence, Most Reverend Dr. Daniel Okoh has charged Christians to submit their lives to the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

Dr. Okoh who is also the General Superintendent of Christ Holy Church (CHC) International while speaking at the 2023 Prayer Summit of the church said that it was important that Christians allow the Spirit of God to lead them, adding that the Holy Spirit not only enables one to conquer all trials and temptations, but helps one to be victorious.

The CAN President while lamenting that some Christians have abandoned the leading of God in their lives and allow the flesh to control them, said that the part of the reasons many people have not received the spirit of God was because they have not sincerely asked for the Holy Spirit of God to come and take control of their life.

The cleric who took his text from Romans Chapter 8 vs 13 and 14 warned against Christians who sell their conscience because of ‘hunger.’

Reminding the Christian faithful of the gains of a Spirit-filled individual, Okoh who is also the International President of the Organization of African Instituted Churches (OIAC) noted that when one receives the Holy Spirit of God, it helps to put to death the evil desires of the flesh and as well, forces the sinful nature and the sinful flesh to submit to the Holy Spirit.

Speaking on the fruits of the Holy Spirit the CAN President said “When you allow the Holy Spirit of God to lead you, it empowers you, it empowers and gives you the gift of the Holy Spirit and makes you useful member of the household of God so that you will be able to do the work of service; rebuilding the household of God.

“When you are led by the Holy Spirit of God, you are led to be patient, you are to persevere, you are led to ensure. You are led to have self-control.

“When you are led by the Holy Spirit of God, then you will begin to bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit as we find in Galatians chapter 5 vs 22. That is what the Holy Spirit of God leads you to achieve. Those fruits must be seen in you by the time you have subdued sinful desires. The Holy Spirit of God leads you to do what is right and to do the will of God.

“By the time you begin to tell the father, it is your will, not my will, you are now being led by the Holy Spirit of God.

“When you see food and you begin to choose food; the one that the Lord wants you to eat and the one He doesn’t want you to eat, you are at that point being led by the Holy Spirit of God. There are people today, who eat whatever that they see, they take whatever that they are given. They sell their conscience because they think that they are hungry. The one who is led by the Holy Spirit of God may be hungry, he wouldn’t eat anything or everything, but that one that God chooses.

“When you are led by the Holy Spirit of God, you let Him choose for you and He will lead you to where He wants you to be useful to Him. You will live your life according to the purpose of God.

“When you are a child of God, the Holy Spirit controls you and you will begin to live a Spirit-filled life and a life controlled by the Holy Spirit and not by the things of the world or the behavior of others.

“When you are led by the Holy Spirit of God, you will learn not to listen to gossip. You will learn not to listen to negative things that people say about you, but you listen to what the Holy Spirit tells you about you.

“When you are led by the Holy Spirit of God, you are empowered to witness to the power and love of Jesus. You will not be ashamed to witness; you will not lack testimonies with which you witness because you will continue to live a life of gratitude that will make you identify what God does for you every moment of your life which you will turn into testimonies.

“When you are led by the Holy Spirit of God, you will continue to grow and mature spiritually and when people will hear you speak even in your ordinary conversations with others, they will know that you have grown spiritually.

“When you receive the Holy Spirit and the gift of the Holy Spirit you will increase in wisdom; you will not remain at the level where you were in the past.”
